Heroes and others

My hero for this month is registrar THE NAMEIT CORPORATION. These folks are right on the cutting edge of spam prevention. Let me explain.

If ever you want to see what sites have been spammed in the past 24 hours, even in the past hour, take a look at AbuseButler. This month I have noticed an exciting trend. There is an increasing number of recently spammed sites listed there with an address of 127.0.0.127. This is an address that can never be reached, meaning that the spammed site has been taken down. It is an address that is used by my hero, The Nameit Corporation. It seems our spammers have figured that they are a safe haven for their sites, and have been registering them there en masse. But my hero has decided enough is too much. And they are killing them off in mid flight.

My not so great hero of the month is Network Solutions. Asked to remove a domain (dnspotato.com) that is being used to resolve access to over 50 of Alex Polyakov's sites, they tried but failed to carry out the request. It's back to registrar school 101 for Network Solutions.

And guess what! Many of the sites that my hero is having to shut down one by one, could all have been shut down in one fell swoop if only Network Solutions had done the job properly.

Bravo!
That's GREAT news! Have they made any official announcement about that? What brought about such a sweeping change? tell tell!

Nameit / aitdomains.com has no time for criminals
I have seen no "announcement" as such. But I checked clause 11 in their Registration Agreement - http://aitdomains.com/legal/print_agreement_com_net.php and I assume they are actively implementing it. If only all registrars could be so proactive.

HKDNR
HKDNR is working with both the Hong Kong police and the local HKCERT.org to clean up the mess created by the invasion of foreign spam merchants. I suspect that Hong Kong will not be a safe haven for foreign criminals for long. Keep complaining, and keep the pressure on the bad guys - meaning the spammers, not the over-worked registrars.
